CHOOSING A PROFESSIONAL ROOFER

When the time comes to have your roof re-shingled, it can often be a daunting task to find good companies and more importantly to decide which one you will choose to complete the necessary work. Rest assured, there are very good companies out there, but a little homework on your part will make your experience much more positive and ensure that the work is well executed.

IMPORTANT STEPS

The first step is to contact several companies to have them evaluate and inspect your roof. A minimum of 3 different quotes is recommended. It is normal to wait a few days for a company to do an inspection/quote but you shouldn’t have to wait more than a few hours to receive a return call when contacting their office (during normal business hours). Waiting ten days for a response or having to call 4 times to get someone to call you back may be a sign of things to come. Also, when looking through your estimates, make sure that the companies are offering similar products and materials. One company may be more expensive but offering you something of greater value. Don’t hesitate to ask questions.

Please be weary of "Fly-By-Nights" roofers. Legitimate companies cannot compete against roofers who do not pay for WSIB, mandatory liability insurance, and other costs to ensure employee and client protection. You may save some money by dealing with them at first, but the risks to you are quite significant. Deposits should never be made in cash as it is not traceable should the roofer never show up to perform the work agreed on (it is not as uncommon as you think). Names and complete addresses are important so you can locate them when problems occur.

Most people are not aware that it is the homeowner's responsibility to ensure that the workers they hire are fully insured and have employee insurance with the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB). Protect yourself and be sure to ask for these documents. All reputable companies will be able to provide you with them promptly.
